    2 eggs
  • Add nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, and milk. Continue to whisk until all ingredients are well blended.
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon powder, 1/2 cup milk
  • Dip the bread in the mixture.
    4 slices bread
  • Heat a pan and then cook each side of the bread until the color turns golden brown.
  • Arrange the french toast in a plate. Pour maple syrup and then top with fresh strawberries and powdered sugar.
10 pieces strawberries, 1/2 cup maple syrup, 1 tablespoon confectioners sugar
  • Serve!

Notes

  • Avoid soaking too long. Letting the bread sit too long in the egg mixture can turn it soggy and hard to flip. I count 2 to 3 seconds per side, enough to coat without overloading. Thicker bread will need slightly more time but still shouldn't feel heavy or wet before cooking.
  • Use slightly stale bread. Day-old bread absorbs the mixture more evenly and holds its shape better in the pan. If your bread is too fresh and soft, it might tear or clump. You can leave fresh bread slices out for 30 minutes to dry slightly if needed.
  • Don’t skip patting strawberries dry. Wet berries slide off the toast and water down the syrup. I slice the strawberries first and rest them on a paper towel to remove extra moisture. This also keeps the powdered sugar from clumping.
