Heat the cooking oil in a wok.

Sauté the garlic until it starts to brown.

Add the onion, sauté for 30 seconds.

Add the tomatoes. Continue sautéing for 1 ½ minutes.

Put the squid into the wok. Sauté for 20 seconds.

Pour-in soy sauce, white vinegar, and water. Cover the wok. Let mixture boil.

Reduce the heat to the lowest setting. Cook the squid for 1 minute.
Remove the squid from the wok and place it on a clean bowl for the meantime. Note: leave the other ingredients in the wok.
Season the sauce with sugar, salt, and ground black pepper. Continue cooking until the sauce reduces in half.

Add the squid back into the wok. Gently toss.
Transfer to a serving bowl. Serve warm with rice.
